What causes the browing deposites on a hydraulic spool?

Were these multiple choice questions/

If multiplle choice, what were the possible answers?

If not multip;e choice, what book or books were used to teach the hydraulic portion of the class?

A pilot operated check valve needs to be of the external drain type if backpressure can be applied to the check valve by other valves in the circuit. This would typically be the case if a proportional valve is used, or if a flow control valve is install on the free-flow inlet side of the check.
