Hi forumer,
As you know, all the hydraulic oil colour is thin clear colour. Difficult to detect the leakage during running especially in machine tool where totally covered and expose to cutting coolant.

I would like to know if you having any experience troubleshooting the leak point of your hydraulic system.

I have heard about "Red Dye" that pour into the hydraulic tank and easily detect leak point by the red colour. Can you help me to idetify maker and code of the "Red Dye"?

Multiple ways of detecting leak
- Adding red dye to oil, same as what Doug has explained, however this is not widely practiced.
- Audis sound testing, used for smaller Hydraulic equipment.
-Adding Fluorescent dye to the oil and detecting the leaks under black lights.

Besides the other suggestions another method is to thoroughly clean and dry suspected area and either: 1) Spray dye-penetrate developer around the suspected area or 2) Add baby powder to suspect area. Then operate machine. The oil absorbs into the powder where it is then visible.

The developer is made by Magnaflux and others, and is white in colour. It washes off after leak check is finished.
