Feed control valve can be placed either meter-out or meter-in? Can anyone tell me which one is more preferable at diff. application? with reasons. And specialy for machine tool and press application which one is preferable? since i am new at hydraulic designing hence i need a little help! thanks

You may get differing opinions. This is a controversial issue.

There are many types of speed control including meter in, meter out, and bleed off. Load character and cycle need to evaluated to determine which type may be best. For instance, bleed off and meter in control will not work for negative or overrunning loads unless load holding is handled by another valve, like a counterbalance.

Most manufacturers will have short web or paper blurbs describing basic applications of their valves, along with cautions.

thanks craig, can you tell me for machine tool applications where positional accuracy should be best, and vibration should not be present at that time which arrangement is best? i guess meter out, is it?

In this case you should be using a servo valve or a servo solenoid valve.

As Peter notes servo valves may be indicated.

Low performance machine tools may work satisfactorily with proportional valves or even with fixed or moveable mechanical stops.

Servo valves may have a combination of meter in and out control in one valve.
