Used that circit many times on Uni-Directional otor Drives.

One caution, If the motor can turn at a pressure lower than pressure drop across the Bypass valve it may never completely stop.

I'd have a relief valve in there too.

Used this a lot to power augers on the farm. Crudely adjustable for speed, by opening the valve part way. or if you have a pressure compensasted flow control instead of the ball valve, you can get some speed control.

Might be a heat source though, depending on loads and speeds.

Oft times, simple is best.

Remember safety first as well. This circuit is not suitable where the motor position must be secured like a propulsion circuit or any other application where someone could get caught in a pinch point should the motor move unexpectedly.
