Good morning, my name is Joey Montgomery and I am a high school senior in Newark, Delaware, United States. I am currently attending a four year Vo-Tech school and I am in the Industrial Mechanics career area. A graduation requirement that we all have here is to complete a "senior project" ten page paper and product. I am going to be writing my paper on Pneumatics and building an Air Hockey Table. We need to use 25 sources on our paper, two of which are periodicals, two of which are books, and another that must be an interview. Therefore, I am requesting you to answer these questions thoroughly for me, as I would deeply appreciate.
- What is the actual meaning of pneumatics and what are they most often used for? - How do pneumatics operate? - What are some advantages/disadvantages of using pneumatics? - What are the pros and cons of using pneumatics versus hydraulics? - What are some types of pneumatic instruments and what are they used for? - How do pneumatics relate to our everyday lives today? Again, thank you for your time and any additional help would be more than appreciated. Thank you! |

What is the actual meaning of pneumatics?
pneumatic adj. 1. of or pertaining to air, gases, or wind. 2. of or pertaining to pneumatics. 3. operated by air or by the pressure or exhaustion of air: a pneumatic drill. 4. filled with or containing compressed air, as a tire. 5. of or pertaining to the spirit; spiritual. 6. having lungs or air cavities. -n. 7. a pneumatic tire. pneumatically, adv. pneumaticity n. pneumatics n. (used with a sing.v.) the branch of physics that deals with the mechanical properties of air and other gasses what are they most often used for? Transfer of electrical or mechanical energy to perform linear or rotary motion in a compact low to medium force package. How do pneumatics operate? Pneumatics uses compressed atmospheric air or in some cases other gasses to exert force on an area to produce linear or rotary motion. What are some advantages? Compact package at the work area, quiet operation, ease of use, relatively safe, built-in safety from overload, simple to transmit to all work areas. disadvantages of using pneumatics? Very low efficienct, less than 50% of input, power is available at the work area, Not reliable at low speed, Not easy to position accuarately especially at high force. What are the pros and cons of using pneumatics versus hydraulics? Hydraulics is the better choice for High Force, precise positioning and controlled movement. Operating cost is much lower for hydraulics since they offer efficiencies in the 85% or better range. However, first cost is higher due to the need for a power unit and more robust components. What are some types of pneumatic instruments and what are they used for? Pressure Gauges toshow pressure reading. Flow Meters to show flow amount. How do pneumatics relate to our everyday lives today? Most of us have doors that use pneumatics to retard there closing. Everyone rides on Pneumatic tires. Some use bellows to stoke the fire in the fireplace, while others use chairs that are height adjustable and have a spring effect from trapped air at pressure. When our new roof was installed last year no one had a hammer, every shingle was nailed down with an air nailer. In my garage is a 1.5 HP compressor that I use to run air nailers, rivet guns and blow off dirt. Bud Trinkel FP Consultant Retired "Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wings.
