INTERMAT 2024 Demonstrates Construction Industry Focus on Sustainability

April 30, 2024
Several OEMs and component suppliers showcased electrification solutions and other technologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of construction equipment.

Sustainability was the central theme of INTERMAT 2024 — a triennial international construction industry event which alternates its rotation with CONEXPO-CON/AGG and bauma. Like many other sectors, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic as construction equipment manufacturers, component suppliers and many others in the industry look to lower their environmental impact.

Development of machines, systems and processes which help to reduce emissions, energy and materials use, and downtime are among the ways the industry is aiming to be more sustainable, all of which was on display at this year's event which took place April 24-27 in Paris, France.

INTERMAT was structured into five hubs to highlight areas of focus for the construction industry, which included a new hub for 2024 called New Technologies & Energies. This portion of the show was created to spotlight solutions designed to reduce emissions as well as digital products which can aid with better monitoring and performance.

The Innovation Awards held in conjuction with the event also had a category dedicated to alternative energy solutions and other innovations that would aid sustainability efforts.

The show itself was also reformatted to include a broad range of products while being held over a shorter period of time to help mitigate the event's potential environmental impact. According to show organizers, the path to zero emissions is a vital one for the construction industry and is bringing about many changes for equipment manufacturers, suppliers, rental companies and service providers.

In recent years, development of electric-powered machines, as well as components and systems to aid the transition to electrification, has increased to meet global emissions reduction initiatives. Additional benefits such as reduced noise, maintenance and operating costs are also helping drive the move to electric. Various city or regional regulations are also necessitating use of electric construction equipment.

At INTERMAT 2024, several companies introduced new machines and systems aimed at improving the sustainability of the construction industry which are highlighted in this media gallery.
